80, a resident of 5048 Antioch Road, died Friday, Nov. 13 at Select Specialty Hospital in Durham. He was the son of the Late Wilbert Morton and Bessie Hedgepeth Morton. He was a retired veteran of the United States Army and the Granville County Sheriff's Department. He a former member of the Oxford Police Department. He was a graduate of the former Mary Potter Academy.
He distinguished his military service with two tours of duty in Viet Nam. He was a member of Antioch Baptist Church where he was a past chairman of the Board of Trustees and President of the Senior Choir. He served with the Antioch Volunteer Fire Department and was a member of American Legion Hester-Crews Post #166 and Blooming Star Masonic Lodge #53. He loved farming and could often be seen riding his tractor around the neighborhoods.
Wilbert would want us to mention FIRST that he was survived by his pride and joy, his three grandchildren, (we're sure he has shown you the pictures) Jalisa Morton, David Morton and Dawson Morton; a daughter, Felicia Eddie of Oxford; two sons, Michael Morton (LaKia) of Atlanta, GA and Lamarcus Shamberger of San Jose, CA; a sister, Erma Jones of Oxford; a brother, William Morton, Sr. of Oxford; a nephew/brother, Robert D. Morton (Pattie) also of Oxford; mother of his children, ex-wife and friend, Harriett Long Morton of Oxford; a vast number of nieces, nephews, other loving relatives and caring friends.
Funeral serves will be conducted Tuesday, Nov. 17 at 2:00 P.M. at Antioch Baptist Church by Rev. Joe D. Shaw, Jr. Burial will be in the church cemetery. A viewing will be held Monday, Nov. 16, from 11:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. at Wright Funeral Home. The family will be receiving visitors at the residence of Felicia Eddie,3124 Henry Wilson Road.
