74, a native of Granville County,and the son of the late Thurland R. and Mary Garrett, Sr., died Thursday, April 14 in Michigan.
He was a graduate of the former Mary Potter Academy in Oxford. NC. He retired in 2004 as Sergeant of Security at Beth Israel Medical Center in Manhatten, New York, after thirty-four years of service.
At the age of twenty he married Helen Griffin and they were the proud parents of Laura Marie Garrett and Lawrence Anthony Garrett. His second wife, Delois, preceded him in death. In 2002 he would marry his present wife, Sherry, and celebrate the addition of her two sons, DeWaun C. Driver and Captain Samuel Lockhart, Jr. He was a man that was full of joy with a laugh that was contagious. He was a man of great faith and never missed an opportunity to witness the Word to family, friends and strangers.
In 2007 he was ordained a Deacon at Deeper Life Christian Center.
He is survived by his devoted and beloved wife, Sherry; a daughter, Laura Hayes (Shahyid) of Charlotte, NC; three sons, Lawrence of New Brunswick, NJ and DeWaun of Detroit, MI and Samuel of Minot, ND; two sisters, Mary Ann Casson (Ronnie) and Hazel Garrett both of Dover, DE; a mother-in-law, Mary E. Hunt of Detroit, MI; six grandchildren, Kevin, Toni, Veda, Christina, Kavon and Aryn; special brothers, Bruce Smith (Jamison) of NC, Chuck Nelson (Pansy), Kelvin and Lonnie both of MI.
Funeral services were conducted Friday, April 22 at 10:00 a.m. at Word of Faith International Christian Center in Southfield, MI.
