A native of Granville County, and long-time resident of Washington, DC, died Friday, Oct. 1, 2021 at her home. She was the third child of four that blessed the union of Eddie Leon Tyler and Minnie Hamme Tyler.

Dr. Brown was a graduate of the former Mary Potter Academy and received a Bachelor of Arts and Doctor of Education Degrees from Virginia Union University, George Washington University and Nova University.

She worked in the District of Columbia Public School System for thirty-seven years, at all levels, before retiring as Associate Superintendent of Student Services. As Associate Superintendent of D.C. Public Schools, she was responsible for the administration of 13 branches and units that included the Department of Athletics, Attendance and Records, Community Services, Dropout Prevention Programs, Guidance and Counseling, International Exchange Programs, Out of Boundary Student Transfers, Summer School, Textbook Services, Travel and Field Trips, Visiting Instruction Service Programs and Work Permits.

Other outstanding accomplishments included her commitment to public service and civic contributions to the District of Columbia. She was elected Democratic National Committee Woman, served as Treasurer of the D.C. Denver 2008 Convention Committee, Treasurer of the D.C. Democratic "Obama for Change" slate, and Co-Chairperson and Treasurer of the D.C. Presidential Gala for Obama.

Dr. Brown served on the board of several political, civic, arts, education, and Women's organizations including Chairperson of The United Black Fund Scholarship Program, member of the Virginia Union University Board of trustees, member of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Choral Arts Society, and member of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration Committee. She also served as Chairperson of the Scholarship Committee for the Washington, D.C. Chapter of Links, Inc., and the Scholarship Committee for Delta Sigma Theta Sorority.

She received numerous honors and awards and was inducted into the D.C. Hall of Fame Society for Educational Leadership and was recognized by the National Cathedral for her dedicated service to the Catherdal Scholars Program.

Dr. Brown was predeceased by her husband, Hugh Lewis Brown. Survivors include her siblings, Wilhelmina Tyler Posey, Eddie Leon Tyler, Jr. and Gloria Joan Williams (Conrad); nieces Jacqueline Posey, Debbie Tyler Wilkerson (Barry), Angela Virgie Williams and Rachel Yvonne Williams; great nieces Jennifer Ajudua, Brandi Wilkerson Harmon, and Shanna Wilkerson Flynn; and a vast number of other loving relatives and caring friends.

A visitation will be held Thursday, October 7 at Takoma Park Baptist Church, 635 Aspen Street, Northwest, Washington, D.C. from 7pm-9pm. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, October 16 at 11am at First Baptist Church with a private entombment at Meadowview Memorial Park. Arrangements are being entrusted to Chinn-Baker Funeral Service in Arlington, VA, and Wright Funeral Home in Oxford, NC.
